Dishwashers are a staple in many households, streamlining the often tedious task of washing dishes. However, like all appliances, they aren’t immune to issues. A prevalent problem with Bosch dishwashers is their inability to drain. If you’re faced with a Bosch dishwasher that’s not draining, you’re not alone.
This guide is here to help. An E24 error code is often the telltale sign of this issue. When you see water remaining in your dishwasher accompanied by the E24 error code, it strongly indicates a blockage inside your Bosch dishwasher, hindering its draining process. This guide will walk you through the steps to diagnose and address the problem.
Common Causes for a Bosch Dishwasher Not Draining
- Blocked Filter Unit: Over time, food particles can accumulate in the filter, preventing the dishwasher from draining properly. The filter stops these particles from redepositing onto your clean dishes and clogging the drains.
- Blocked Dishwasher Pump: The pump forces water into the spray arms and directs it into the drain hose. If it’s blocked, your dishwasher won’t drain as it should.
- Twisted or Kinked Drain Hose: The hose is essential for draining water. It can prevent water from flowing out if it’s twisted or has sharp bends.
- Blocked Drain Lines: If you have a garbage disposal, debris can sometimes back up, causing a blockage.
- Clogged Air Gap: Not all Bosch dishwashers have an air gap, but if yours does, it’s a small cap on top of the sink. It can get clogged and needs to be cleaned out.
- Drain Pump Failure: The drain pump is crucial for forcing water out. If it fails, the water remains inside.

What does the E24 error code mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
The E24 error code on a Bosch dishwasher indicates a drainage issue. This can be due to a blockage inside the dishwasher, a kinked drain hose, or a faulty drain pump.
How often should I clean the filter in my Bosch dishwasher?
It’s recommended to check and clean the filter regularly, at least once a month, to ensure optimal performance and prevent drainage issues.
Can I use commercial cleaning agents to clean my dishwasher?
Yes, there are commercial dishwasher cleaners available that can be used. However, natural solutions like white vinegar and baking soda are also effective and eco-friendly options.
Is it safe to run the dishwasher without the filter?
No, the filter prevents larger debris from getting into the drain and potentially causing blockages. Running the dishwasher without the filter can lead to more significant issues.
How do I know if my drain pump is faulty?
If you’ve checked for blockages and ensured that the drain hose is not kinked, but water still remains in the dishwasher, the drain pump might be the issue. You might also hear unusual noises from the pump area.
Can I replace the drain pump myself?
While it’s possible for someone with DIY skills to replace the drain pump, it’s recommended to consult the user manual or call a professional to ensure the job is done correctly.

Hi,
I am having the same issue with draining and water being left in the bottom of my Bosch dishwasher. I get error code e24. I have tried the following:

-Replaced drain pump with new
Not sure what else it can be. Any help appreciated! Thanks

I just had the same problem. Checked filters, pump, etc. Ran a probe (old piece of telephone cable) through the drain hose. Finally I pulled the machine and observed the action of the water inlet device located on the side of the machine. It handles not only the water input, but also the waste drain. It seems to include an air gap, which had a gap, but water only trickled through when draining. I disconnected the drain hose and drained the device, also getting as much water as I could from the hose from the pump to this device. I put it all back together and ran a rinse cycle. The drain flow was much more robust, and there was only the smallest of gaps at the top of the loop

Hey there,
Thanks for your insight. My Bosch is old, and motherboard was replaced 2 years ago. I just had new countertops put in and a new sink. Same garbage disposal. The water is at the bottom of a cycle, intermittently. I wonder if it has to do with the disposal, new sink or something. Thoughts? Much appreciated.
Annie
